Geography and Climate in Saipan
The island of Saipan is relatively small with a land mass of only 44 square miles. Being an island in the Pacific Ocean close to the equator, Saipan has a tropical climate all year around with extremely hot, sunny and humid weather most of the year. The island has two seasons throughout the year, a dry season and a rainy season. As soon as you step off the airplane you’ll notice how humid it is on the island, and it does take a little getting used to when you first arrive in Saipan.
Languages Spoken in Saipan
The official language in Saipan is English which is spoken and taught in all the schools. In addition to English, the indigenous language of the local people is called Chamorro. Most other languages spoken in Saipan are Asian because of the island’s close proximity to the Asian region. Many people come from Asia to vacation or live in Saipan. These languages include Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Filipino. If your fluent in English you won’t have a problem conversing with people on the island as almost everyone speaks fluent English.
Population of Saipan
The total population of Saipan consists of about 48,000 people as of a 2010 census. Although there are many more people on the island at any one time if you include tourists who are on vacation.
Currency of Saipan
The official currency used in Saipan is the United States dollar USD. There are a number of currency exchange shops in the island where you can exchange your currency to USD. Also, many hotels will exchange your currency.
Transportation in Saipan
There are no reliable mass transportation systems in Saipan like trains or buses. If you plan on traveling around the island the best way to do this is to rent a car from one of the local car rental companies. The roads all follow United States driving laws.
